Why should I choose concrete instead of granite, marble, or another solid surface?
Concrete pieces are handmade just for you and the possibilities are boundless. Unlike granite or other surfaces, we can sculpt, mold, inlay, and texture concrete, customizing shapes and designs for your particular setting and style. From a farmhouse kitchen to a Tuscan bath, concrete complements your look and reflects your taste.
And, concrete is practical as well as beautiful. Because concrete pieces are crafted to fit your space, needs, and vision concrete pieces are never limited by size or pattern like granite slabs we can incorporate drain boards, cutting board slides, trivets, and integral sinks into our countertops and bath vanities with ease.
Then, you can add pebbles, coins, and other mementos, making each piece distinctly yours. No other material can offer that!
How many color choices do I have?
We offer 16 standard colors, but we can custom-mix any color to complement your taste and décor. Remember, concrete colors work like yarn dye-lots we use the same formula each time we pour the concrete, but the color can vary from batch to batch. Therefore, the color of your project might not match the sample exactly.
What can be made out of concrete?
Most anything you can imagine... from kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, sinks and fireplace surrounds to tables, backsplashes, tub surrounds, BBQ surrounds, columns, tiles, wall panels, and even bathtubs. We also make accent pieces like a lamp to match your fireplace or a kitchen island to match your countertop. Just let us know what you'd like, and we'll take it from there.
Are concrete countertops affordable?
The cost of concrete is very competitive when compared to high-end granite and other engineered countertop materials. Choices about thickness, irregular or curved shapes, cutting boards and drain boards, inlay work, custom edges, and back splashes affect the overall cost, and we'll give you a solid estimate and work with you to find options that fit your project goals and budget.
Keep in mind that "square-foot pricing" works for products like granite, when large companies machine-produce thousands of square feet every day. But, since concrete is crafted specifically for each client and since it can incorporate designs and finishes not possible with other materials that pricing structure often isn't accurate. However, some more commonly used designs can be estimated at a square foot price.
How should I care for my concrete piece?
Just give your concrete countertop, vanity, or accessory a light buff with a soft, waxed cloth (we recommend Carnuba wax) a few times a year to remove fingerprints and renew surface luster. Stay away from abrasive cleaners like Ajax, also Formula 409 or Simple Green.
How thick are concrete countertops?
Our countertops are usually about 2" thick, so we can incorporate drain boards and cutting boards into the surface.
Does concrete stain?
Concrete surfaces that are properly sealed and cared for will rarely stain. Acidic liquids like red wine, lemon juice, and vinegar can etch the surface, but if you immediately clean up spills, staining and etching shouldn't be a problem.
Does concrete crack or chip?
After casting, we carefully cure all our concrete pieces to eliminate the chance of structural cracks. And, we design our countertop and vanity edges to minimize chipping even if struck by a hard object. Occasionally micro-cracks occur in narrow areas, but they don't affect strength or life-span and they can easily be filled with color-matched epoxy, if desired. Usually tiny cracks become part of concrete's natural appeal, sort of like creases in your favorite pair of leather boots.
Will concrete countertops be too heavy for my cabinets?
Our countertops weigh about 22 lbs. per square foot, which is similar to other stone products and well within load capacities for standard, quality-made cabinets. Off-the-shelf, modular, or pressboard cabinets might require some reinforcement.
Can I cut and chop on my concrete countertop?
We recommend you use a cutting board to protect your concrete surface and remember, we can always incorporate a removable cutting board right into your countertop, if you'd like.
How about hot pots and pans?
Although concrete is heat-resistant, we recommend using pot holders or hot plates to protect your countertop we can put a permanent or removable trivet right into your countertop.
What is the process? How long does it take?
We come out to your home to measure and create templates for your project and space. Then, back in our workshop, we create molds from the templates and then mix, color, and pour concrete into the molds, casting each piece. After the concrete has cured for about three weeks, we add a sealant and your piece is ready to be delivered and installed.
From templates through installation, a custom countertop usually takes four to six weeks. We'll carefully estimate other projects for you and we do work hard to complete projects on time.
Do you pour the concrete on location?
No. We do not pour on site. All products are cast in our workshop
What kind of sealers do you use?
We use a water-penetrating sealer that's low in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds that are emitted as gases from certain solids) for all our concrete countertops.
Who will install my countertop or other project?
Our skilled Concrete Artisan craftspeople!
